Jet - KIA (Killed in Action)
Jet have something to live up to after their multimillion debut Get Born broke them into the main stream, show casing their regurgitated take on rock n roll.
Their second attempt, Shine On didn’t win as many plaudits, peaking at No. 13 in the UK charts and soon falling away into obscurity.
This didn’t matter to their army of fans, following their tireless touring schedule and writing gems such as Are You Gonna Be My Girl which will be danced to on many-a-dance floor for many years to come.
Three years later they’re back and they’re up to the same old tricks. KIA (Killed in Action) is by no means sweeping up the remnants of cast off B sides by bands greater than themselves but is a pioneering attempt spicing up their own sound.
They’ve done it quite well but it is so disappointingly incomplete that they’re going to have to rely on the rest of the material on their new, yet to be named third album to make the critics and fans come running back to their side.
We’re greeted by sirens and a popping bass line for starters and then Nic Cester begins singing, while he arguably maintains the greatest rock n roll scream of our era it’s all wasted on shallow lyrics that try in a vain attempt to make you believe that Jet have got something political to say. They do rhyme though, well done boys.
It’s a great shame as they shake through the song on a high musical note fusing interesting licks, beats and backing vocals. The song is inconsistent which, for Jet, actually works and when they reach the chorus; it’s punchy and sticks in your head.
Jet are off the mark with their new single but will spark a glimmer of interest with their new take on their old sound.
